This works today: pass thumbnail (a publicly reachable image URL) on the video entry in mediaItems when you create the post with POST /v1/posts. We request uploadThumbnail on LinkedIn's Videos API at initializeUpload and PUT your image to the thumbnail upload URL they return before finalizing, so the custom cover is set on the video itself rather than being a separate preview image. JPG or PNG, up to 10MB. If LinkedIn does not return a thumbnail upload URL we still publish the post and fall back to their auto-generated cover instead of failing it.
