Instagram – Feature request: Instagram via Facebook Login in the dashboard connect link

Ask
Add the Facebook Login option for Instagram (loginMethod=facebook_login) to the “link” option in the dashboard’s Connect Accounts. The client would open the link, log in with their own Facebook account, pick the Page that has their Instagram professional account linked, and finish the connection without anyone on our side touching their assets.

Today the shareable link only runs the default Instagram Login. The API already supports the via-Facebook flow end to end (connect with loginMethod=facebook_login → list Pages with a linked IG account → POST /v1/connect/instagram/select-account). It just isn’t offered in the link.

Scope: the full Instagram surface, meaning ads (IG placements run from the linked Page), organic publishing, DMs/comments and insights.

Why

Clients can’t always add us as admins. Common reasons:

  • The client’s BM is locked down by their own IT or agency policy.

  • The person who owns the Page doesn’t know how to add a partner.

  • Admin invites get stuck on verification.

  • The client just doesn’t want to hand out admin rights.

Right now, getting Instagram connected the via-Facebook way means we need Page access first. The link flow exists to solve exactly this problem, but it only covers Instagram Login.

Instagram Login doesn’t cover ads. An Instagram account connected through Instagram Login has no Page and no Facebook Graph token behind it, so it can’t serve as the Page-linked identity for IG ad placements. For any client running ads, the link-based connection is a dead end, and we fall back to chasing admin access.

The client should own the grant. When the client authenticates with their own login, they decide which Page/IG account to share and can revoke it themselves. That’s cleaner than a token tied to our staff’s personal profiles. It’s the same reasoning as the FLB request.

Product asks

  1. Login method choice when generating the link: Instagram → “Instagram Login” or “via Facebook”. Same behavior with branded welcome screens and phone handoff/QR.

  2. Hosted Page picker on the link page that only lists Pages with a linked IG professional account. It should also have a clear empty state (“No Page with a linked Instagram account found — link one in Page settings / Accounts Center, then reopen this link”) instead of a silent failure.

  3. FLB-aware: if the workspace has the FLB login configuration enabled for ads, the link uses the config_id dialog. The client picks the business, Page and IG account in Meta’s native asset picker, so one link from the client gives us a system-user-backed connection for both ads and Instagram.

  4. Link lifetime long enough for real clients. They rarely act within minutes, so something like several days for dashboard links, or a configurable expiry.

  5. Completion notice in the dashboard, plus the existing account.connected webhook, so we know when the client has finished.

  6. In-place switch: reconnecting an existing profile’s Instagram from Instagram Login to via-Facebook, for the same IG identity, swaps the token without purging conversations, external posts or stats.
